Job Description

BIW is hiring Waterfront Designers at the following levels:

 

  • 1st Class Designer: $32.80/Hr. - $39.33/Hr.
  • 2nd Class Designer: $29.34/Hr. - $31.51/Hr.
  • A "While Assigned" rate of $2.00/Hr. is available with these positions.

These positions are located onsite in Bath and DO NOT any ability for remote work.

 

We are looking for one Waterfront Pipe Liaison, one Waterfront Mechanical Liaison, and one Waterfront Hull Outfit Liaison.

 

Waterfront Engineering and Design is seeking skilled, highly motivated Designers to support the development and integration of shipboard mechanical, piping, and HVAC systems. The successful candidates will be responsible for creating detailed 3D models, piping isometric drawings, system schematics, and machinery arrangements in accordance with applicable maritime standards (ABS, USCG) and project specifications. This role involves close collaboration with hull management, engineers and other design disciplines to ensure accurate and efficient documentation for propulsion, cooling, ventilation, and hydraulic systems aboard vessels. Experience in shipbuilding or marine design environments is required.

 

These positions perform a variety of work including:

  • Liaison: Support emergent waterfront issues and interface directly with the production customer on the waterfront, Ship's Force, and GDBIW Engineers / Designers in Bath, Maine. 
  • 3D Modeling & Design: Create detailed 3D models of mechanical equipment, piping systems, remote op gear and HVAC ducting, focusing on material selection, weight distribution, and service accessibility.
  • Production Drawings: Develop, update, and maintain detailed 2D production drawings, including structural foundations for machinery.
  • System Layouts: Create and manage change products, ensuring efficient space management within constrained shipboard environments.
  • Interference Checking: Perform 3D model interference checks to resolve conflicts between piping, HVAC, structural, and electrical components.
  • Documentation: Generate and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs), component specifications, and configuration-controlled drawing packages.
  • Collaboration & Field Support: Work closely with marine engineers, structural teams, and production personnel. Participate in ship checks to verify as-built conditions and support installation.
  • Design Incorporation: Support the continued effort for the WF Mechanical Engineering team to be self -sufficient by incorporating Mechanical BPT’s into class design. 
  • Misc: Proficient in original work of a creative/innovative nature, complex problem solving, or the review/check of other employee's work.

Required/Preferred Education/Training

Required:

  • Excellent computer skills (e.g., demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office tools) required.
  • Demonstrated Proficiency in AutoCAD, CATIA, Solid Works, or other Similar 2-D or 3-D CAD Software Required.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow technical procedures, standards, and work instructions is required.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.  

 Preferred:

  • Ability to perform ship checks through visits to the physical construction products on the waterfront or in fabrication facilities.
  • Knowledge in extraction of computer aided manufacturing data - CAD/CAM, MasterCAM, 5Axis, G-Code.

Required/Preferred Experience

1st Class Required:

  • Minimum of seven (7) years marine design or technically related design experience required, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field (Engineering, Engineering Technology, Architecture), with (4) years’ design experience required, OR
  • Associate/ Vocational School degree with six (6) years design experience required.
  • 3D CAD and/or AutoCAD proficiency.
  • Proficiency in one of the following disciplines: Loft, Structural, Electrical, Pipe, Ventilation, or Hull Outfit. 

2nd Class Required:

  • Minimum of four (4) years design experience, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field (Engineering, Engineering Technology, Architecture), OR
  • Associate/ Vocational School degree with two (2) years design experience, required.
  • 3D CAD or AutoCAD proficiency.

Preferred:

  • Experience with installation and fabrication drawings is highly desirable.
  • Familiar with ship specifications as related to design requirements is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Mechanical Design Incorporation.
