Job Description

Seeking an individual interested in helping create a safety culture where people go home better than they arrived.

 

This position reports to the Director Environmental, Health & Safety and oversees a staff of 6 Safety professionals and 10 Safety Technicians. The position maintains internal contacts with all production departments, Legal and production support groups. Outside contacts are maintained with vendors, sub-contractors, State and Federal OSHA representatives, and various health and safety councils.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Safety Leadership:

  • Enforces compliance with health and safety rules, procedures and regulations.
  • Supervises Safety department staff and manages Safety department resources and budget.
  • Facilitates accident/incident investigations, safety inspections, and safety management system audits.
  • Develops, implements, and reviews procedures, policies, facilities and production methods for compliance with State and Federal Occupational Safety and Health requirements.

Project Execution:

  • Analyzes injury and hazard data to develop strategies for continued reduction in risk exposure and accident and injury reduction.
  • Administers BIW's Safety Management System to ensure compliance with the requirements of ISO 45001.
  • Prepares health and safety performance reports and distributes as required.
  • Performs hazard identification, assessment and control.

Training and Development:

  • Ensures required health and safety training for employees, subcontractors and other guests is administered.

Team Collaboration and Communication:

  • Interfaces with departments across the organization, with particular emphasis on working with the Operations team to improve safety.
  • Interfaces with OSHA and other regulatory agencies on matters pertaining to employee/facility health and safety.
  • Prepares and presents safety information to senior management, safety committees, production and production support groups.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Provides recommendations to management for the improvement of BIW's health and safety program.

Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering or a related field, OR relevant experience, plus seven years of progressively responsible experience in the development and implementation of accident prevention programs.

Required/Preferred Experience

  • Knowledge of shipbuilding methods, State and Federal Health and Safety regulations, and characteristics and effects of toxic substances.
  • Demonstrated management, project coordination and leadership skills required. Strong written, oral communications and organizational skills required.
  • Experience in a heavy industrial environment or shipyard preferred.
  • Specific experience in lifting and handling, rigging, fall protection, confined space entry, industrial hygiene and / or ergonomics preferred.
  • Technical writing skills and knowledge of OSHA and/or industry standards required.
  • Must be physically able to lift, crawl, climb, and work in confined spaces and at heights required.
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and familiarity with Access required.
  • Ability to successfully multi-task and to plan and coordinate time dependent activities required.
  • Strong interpersonal, team building, and decision-making abilities required.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities required.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with personnel in all areas and levels of the company required.
  • Demonstrated training skills required.
  • Ability and willingness to work in and promote a true team environment.
