Job Description

Bath Iron Works is seeking a 2nd Shift Supervisor to join our Safety & Health department. In this role you will be responsible for supporting safety operations on 2nd shift, supervision of 2nd shift Safety Technicians, and for assisting with the administration and management of occupational health and safety programs within the Safety Engineering discipline in a very dynamic, fast paced shipyard industry. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety Leadership:
    • Identifying workplace hazards and feasible means of abatement
    • Participating in regular scheduled workplace inspections
    • Developing fall protection plans
    • Provide guidance and support to 2nd shift operations as primary safety support resource
  • Project Execution:
    • Assisting with establishing and maintaining safety and health programs and management systems
    • Lead execution of Safety Technician activities and scheduling
    • Monitor work quality of 2nd shift safety operations
  • Training and Development:
    • Provide training as necessary to ensure total safety culture is attainable
  • Team Collaboration and Communication:
    • Assisting management and supervision with the recognition and abatement of hazards
    • Providing direction and technical support on compliance with OSHA standards and company procedures
    • Use electronic time accounting system (WFM) to maintain 2nd shift safety charging and time.
    • Ensure accountability of task and goal completion.
    • Understand, support, and administer union labor contract(s) as necessary
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Conduct root cause accident and incident investigations as well as developing subsequent corrective action(s)
    • Reviewing the effectiveness of compliance programs
    • Participate in Business Operating System (BOS) principles

Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental, safety, and health science or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Specific demonstrated experience in workplace health and safety programs/oversight may be substituted for educational requirements.

Required/Preferred Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in health and safety oversight/programs.
  • Experience in a heavy industrial environment or shipyard preferred.
  • Specific experience in lifting and handling, rigging, fall protection, welding, lockout tags-plus, test and activation, confined space entry, industrial hygiene and / or ergonomics preferred.
  • Technical writing skills and knowledge of OSHA and/or industry standards preferred.
  • Understanding of and ability to utilize A3 and 5-Why problem solving methodologies.
  • Must be physically able to lift, crawl, climb, and work in confined spaces and at heights (required).
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint required.
  • Ability to utilize workflow and collaboration tools such as JIRA, SharePoint, and Smartsheets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability to successfully multi-task and to plan and coordinate time dependent activities required.
  • Good organizational skills, strong interpersonal, team building, and decision-making abilities required.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities required.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with personnel in all areas and levels of the company required.
  • Demonstrated training skills required.
