The Assistant Superintendent, Outside Machinist - 2nd Shift is a leadership role responsible for supporting the Outside Machinist operations across assigned areas. This role provides technical and resource management for Outside Machinist activities and plays a key role in coaching and mentoring Front Line Supervisors to strengthen trade performance and team effectiveness. Operating under the BIW Business Operating System (BOS), the Assistant Superintendent, Outside Machinist - 2nd Shift position ensures compliance with safety, quality, and performance standards while coordinating with other key stakeholders to meet overall milestones.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Leadership:
- Champion BIW safety culture and enforce all safety standards and procedures.
- Ensure proper PPE use, hazard awareness, and adherence to safe work practices.
- Support safety training and continuous improvement in workplace safety performance.
Project Execution:
- Lead execution of Outside Machinist activities to support ship/unit schedules for Main Propulsion.
- Monitor quality of work performed; ensure first-time quality through proper oversight and training.
- Provide technical guidance and support to Supervisors and mechanics.
- Support execution of Plan of the Week (POW) and coordinate with area management to align resources with operational needs.
Operational Management:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for Outside Machinist in a respective area and/or trade category.
- Manage and recommend manpower moves within and between areas to support operational priorities.
- Resolve deck plate issues in coordination with area and trade leadership.
- Share responsibility with area management for performance in cost, schedule, and quality.
Mentoring & Team Development:
- Mentor Front Line Supervisors by developing their technical knowledge, leadership skills, and ability to execute daily objectives.
- Coach Supervisors on problem solving, team management, and trade best practices.
- Promote continuous learning and skills development for both supervisors and mechanics.
Continuous Improvement:
- Identify and implement process improvement initiatives to enhance performance and reduce rework.
- Support BOS-aligned improvement activities and structured problem-solving approaches.
- Collaborate with peers and leadership to drive improvements in quality, efficiency, and execution.
