Job Description

The Mechanical Engineering Department supports the design, construction, and testing of main propulsion machinery and equipment on Navy surface combatants of multiple classes, including DDG 51 New Construction and DDG(X) Development. Utilizing the Business Operating System the team works to meet all quality, schedule, and cost goals in support of the Lead Yard Services Operating Plan. 

 

The Senior Mechanical Engineer position supports one of the major mechanical teams for the Design Services organization - Pipe, Machinery, Mechanical, or HVAC Functional Engineering positions. These roles provide major support for projects and ECP proposals. Strong technical leadership and understanding of ship systems, requirements, and standards are critical to success in this role.

 

Key Responsibilities

Safety Leadership:

  • Be a safety leader for your team and ensure that each person leaves in the condition they came in.
  • Ensure all safety training is completed on time. 

Project Execution:

  • Manage activities related to DDG 51 and/or DDG(X) class system and equipment.
  • Responsible for Engineering Change Proposals (ECP’s) and on-time development of system deliverables, including functional diagrams, and technical reporting and analysis.
  • Develop and maintain equipment specifications, diagrams, and associated calculations.
  • Interface with customers to resolve technical issues, recommend changes and maintain appropriate communications.
  • Where BIW is dependent on a supplier to resolve a technical issue, work closely with procurement counterparts to ensure we are getting answers and actions in a timely manner.
  • Occasional travel is required.
  • Develop, document, and present technical position on requirements compliance issues related to design and construction within assigned area of cognizance.
  • Create CAE models that simulate ship system designs and perform analyses and calculations.
  • Develop and define ship system engineering requirements and relate them to top level performance requirements.

Team Collaboration and Communication:

  • Provide technical leadership and direction to interfacing teams, supporting day-to-day operations and providing input for long-term planning.
  • Maintain effective communication with Navy counterparts, Procurement, and Program Office leads.
  • Foster collaboration between Engineering, Design, Program Office, and external customers. 
  • Participate in, or lead, integrated product and process teams as required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; adept at giving technical presentations at group meetings.
  • Positive attitude toward a team environment and demonstrated ability to function as a contributing engineering team member.

Stakeholder Engagement and Business Development:

  • Maintain strong professional relationships with the U.S. Navy including NAVSEA PMS 400, NAVSEA, and other stakeholders.
  • Promote BIW capabilities and Design Services, supporting business development and growth opportunities.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Champion BOS principles and productivity enhancements across teams.
  • Identify and eliminate non-value-added activities, lead implementation of process improvements.
  • Leverage A3 problem-solving and other structured improvement tools.

 

Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering from an ABET accredited university or college required.
  • MS degree and/or PE license preferred.

Required/Preferred Experience

  • Senior Engineer: Minimum 5 years’ experience in Mechanical, Marine, or applicable engineering/technical position.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of machine design, manufacturing, and installation.
  • Knowledge of propulsion, generator, or turbine systems preferred.
  • Experience with testing and qualification of equipment to industry or military standards.
  • System modeling experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of engines, propellers, waterjets, reduction gears, steering gears, shafting, bearings, seals, and generators preferred.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Access database and VBA preferred.
  • WINDOWS and WINDOWS software operating skills required; CAD (CATIA or AutoCAD) skills are desirable.
