Job Description

The Life Cycle Engineering Department supports the design, construction and test of in-service Navy DDG 51 and DDG 1000 surface combatants in multiple locations around the world. Our Functional Engineering group is seeking an entry level Hull/Structure Engineer to join our team. This role supports structural analysis of design modifications for ship alterations required for modernization of the DDG 51 and 1000 classes. Operating under the BIW Business Operating System (BOS), the Hull/Structure Engineer I ensures compliance with safety, quality, and performance standards while coordinating with other key stakeholders to meet overall milestones.

 

  • Responding to Functional Engineering Analysis Requests and providing analysis and written direction to detail design for foundations and structural modifications in support of Navy contracts, Ship Upgrades (SCDs), and special studies.
  • Conducting structural load analyses.
  • Developing and maintaining associated calculations and configuration management of changes to structural baselines since new construction.
  • Developing, documenting and presenting technical positions on requirements compliance issues related to design, integration and construction.
  • Reviewing and approving design products.

Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Naval Architecture or a related degree from ABET accredited school required.
  • 0 to 1 years engineering experience. Familiarity with marine and military systems desired.

Required/Preferred Experience

 

  • Fundamental understanding and knowledge of structural systems, mechanics of materials, and structural analysis methods employed in the engineering and design of steel structures required
  • Ability to develop skills required to critically assess technical problems, evaluate potential options, and develop a solution.
  • Ability to read and understand structural scantlings, structural drawings, and foundation plans required.
  • Demonstrated positive attitude toward participation in a team environment and demonstrated ability to function as a contributing engineering team member.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and assignments with competing priorities desired.
  • WINDOWS, WINDOWS software, and MS Office products operating skills are required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel is required and experience with MathCAD is preferred.
  • Experience with FEA desired.
