The Life Cycle Engineering Department supports the design, construction and test of in-service Navy DDG 51 and DDG 1000 surface combatants in multiple locations around the world. Our DDG 51 Engineering team is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with piping and HVAC system experience to support the engineering and design of distributed shipboard mechanical systems for Ship Alterations. Operating under the BIW Business Operating System (BOS), the Mechanical Engineer I ensures compliance with safety, quality, and performance standards while coordinating with other key stakeholders to meet overall milestones.
- Responding to Functional Engineering Analysis Requests, including deriving engineering system requirements from Navy sources, preparing engineering schematics or written direction to detail design, or development of design rules and standards.
- Performing sizing calculations related to heat load and pressure loss of ventilation and flow and pressure drop modeling of piping systems as well as evaluation of impact to ship margin for Navy proposed changes.
- Developing material requirement documents or specifications for procurement
- Review and approval of vendor submittals and design products
- Working with peers assist the Navy with system troubleshooting and development of changes
- Interfacing with Planning Yard design teammates including Navy counterparts to resolve technical issues and develop appropriate correspondence.
- Participation in special studies and projects working with Peers and Navy sponsors to evaluate ship changes involving replacement of obsolescent equipment, modernization of ship systems, or development of new capabilities.
