Job Description

A Manager of Quality Assurance is responsible for the Quality Management System (QMS) throughout all facilities and departments covered by the QMS at BIW. Operating under the BIW Business Operating System (BOS), this position manages Quality assurance functions, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and performance standards while coordinating with other key stakeholders to meet the requirements of the ISO 9001 standard as well as contractual quality requirements.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Safety Leadership

  • Implement safety programs within assigned areas.
  • Monitor and drive compliance with safety procedures.
  • Lead daily safety initiatives and housekeeping standards.
  • Ensure proper safety training and certification compliance.

Project & Leadership Execution

  • Lead strategic and tactical approaches to ensure that processes are producing results that achieve customer requirements
  • Provide leadership in support of the company’s quality goals by working independently and as part of the team to remove obstacles that are preventing the organization from meeting quality goals.
  • Coordinate audit activity between BIW and external auditors (i.e., ABS, GDIA).
  • Develop performative KPIs, and quantitative risk analytical tools to drive near term quality improvements and mitigate long term risk factors associated with quality.
  • Manage projects utilizing the BOS tools.
  • Ensure that the Local S7 and BMDA labor contracts are implemented fairly and consistently (as applicable).
  • Manage area-specific schedule and resource requirements.
  • Coordinate work execution between multiple departments.
  • Establish and manage QA staffing to meet approved budget.
  • Lead projects as assigned by QA Director.

Training and Development

  • Work with QA Team to ensure an environment of professionalism and professional development.
  • Oversee training and qualification programs.
  • Mentor/develop team member capabilities.
  • Implement skill development initiatives.
  • Maintain various quality responsible procedures and work instructions to ensure consistency of results and address risk identified through quality audits and metrics.

Team Collaboration and Communication

  • Maintain environment of clear expectation setting and of meeting commitments.
  • Respond to customer (internal and external) needs in a timely manner.
  • Lead meetings and progress reviews.
  • Interface with other departments to execute work.
  • Maintain effective communication across shifts.

Continuous Improvement

 

  • Identify opportunity for improvement in the QMS and in our daily processes. Lead the development of those opportunities to assure full implementation of requisite process changes.
  • Focus on quality, analytics, and continuous process improvement across BIW.
  • Execute BOS practices within area.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives.
  • Drive productivity and quality improvements.

Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing, technical or business-related field or a combination of education and experience required.

Required/Preferred Experience

  • Minimum of 8 years working in a shipyard or large manufacturing environment required.
  • 3 years supervisory experience required.
  • Experience with Quality Assurance preferred.
  • Strong, effective leadership and communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage conflict and multiple priorities required.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and make oral and written presentations to senior management and customer required.
  • Excellent administrative skills: effective interpersonal skills, strong, demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, problem solving/decision making, conflict resolution, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated self-starter that is confident interacting with managers and directors throughout the Shipyard.
