Job Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing Navy crews with hull specific Training and/or Familiarization/Indoctrination in both the formal classroom and shipboard hands-on environment, in support of DDG 51 Class ships.

 

Primary areas of instruction will include, but are not limited to: Operation, maintenance, and doctrinal application of DDG 51 Class propulsion and auxiliary systems.

 

In addition, the candidate will serve as training and Fam/Indoc program's propulsion subject matter expert and will further play a major role in evaluating the material condition and training readiness of Bath built ships in preparation for Light-Off-Assessments (LOA's) and crew certification.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Develop, update, and teach curriculum in a formal classroom setting, to include PowerPoint material.
  • Support Manufacturing personnel in the execution of shipboard hands-on indoctrination.
  • Serve as a counterpart to PRE-COM crew Engineering Department personnel, providing guidance and assistance as required to influence the successful transition of ship and crew into the operational fleet.
  • Observe, assess, and train ships personnel in the conduct of practical hands-on application of standard Navy documentation, programs and doctrine: i.e. EOP, EOSS, EOCC, SDOSS, PMS, MSFD, Electrical Safety, etc.
  • Assist in training the ships DCTT and ETT.

Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

Required/Preferred Experience

Sr. Instructor Engineering

  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in active duty surface Navy or equivalent in ship operational testing, operation, and maintenance of ship's propulsion systems and equipment.
  • Three (3) years prior Navy instructor experience or an equivalent level of experience teaching both in the formal classroom and hands-on environment (designated Navy Master Training Specialist a plus)
  • Significant practical, theoretical, and doctrinal experience in Gas Turbine ship engineering, preferably that level of experience which would be gained from previous US Navy senior enlisted sea tours (GSE or EM), EOOW qualified or engineering LDO / Warrant a plus.
  • Three (3) years DDG 51 class experience; DDG 1000 Class experience a plus
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Computer skills: MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) at a minimum

The candidate will be required to travel on reasonable notice to support BIW ships at PRE-COM crew detachment sites (Norfolk, San Diego). Travel away from home would be typically limited to three (3) week duration, four (4) to six (6) weeks per year.
