Job Description

This position in the DDG 51 Engineering Project Office is responsible for the oversight/ direction of engineering and design activities on major new construction projects. This position will be a principal point of contact on assigned projects for customers and other BIW departments and will work closely with the discipline teams to meet project goals


• Leadership role in major projects, including areas of ship design, technical issue resolution, process improvement, and other internal projects as directed by management
• Pro-active in seeking out and resolving issues among engineering/ design disciplines
• Leadership role in developing budgets and reports for assigned projects. Supervise the analysis of program cost & schedule control data
• Leads significant meetings with management, customers, and stakeholders and represents assigned project’s cost, schedule and technical status
• Makes effective and professional presentations to audiences which may include senior management, owners and other VIPs
• Works with Program Office, Operations, Planning and Engineering teams to identify and mitigate risk
• Will be informed of priorities and be expected to schedule work as necessary to complete required tasks
• May supervise task teams in accomplishment of project work


Required/Preferred Education/Training

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering discipline (required)
• Project management training/ certification (preferred)
• Working knowledge of the BIW’s engineering, design planning, and estimating processes as well as BIW’s cost schedule control and planning systems (preferred)
• Ability to obtain security clearance

Required/Preferred Experience

• Experience in the marine industry or relevant project engineering experience: 5 years minimum for senior position; 10 years minimum for principal position
• Technical experience in engineering and design of ship systems (required)
• Managing complex projects in a matrixed organization (preferred)
• Project management with understanding of "Earned Value Management" (required)
• Demonstrated skills in facilitation, consensus building, organization and administration
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Strong computer skills with focus on Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel required
• Work will generally be confined to a clean office environment, but will at times require participation in dusty, dirty areas, to go aboard ship during construction, climb ladders, work throughout yard as required and participate in Sea Trials when required
