  • Job Description

    Marine Designer positions at the following levels:
    1st Class Designer: $25.27 - $29.92

    2nd Class Designer: $22.48 - $24.24
    - Perform marine design activities that include but are not limited to 2D modeling & visualization.
    - Resolution of design related problems encountered during ship availabilities that may involve occasional ship-checking.

    -Performing Liaison activities.
    - Electronic design and drafting of installation drawings. Creation of 4E packages.

    Required/Preferred Education/Training

    1st Class Designer

    Minimum of seven (7) years marine design or technically related design experience or

    Technically related Bachelors/Associates with five (5) years marine design or technically related experience required.


    2nd Class Designer

    -Minimum of four (4) years design experience or

    -Associate/ Vocational School degree with two (2) years design experience required.

    -2D CAD or AUTOCAD proficiency required.

    -Good computer skills (e.g., proficiency with Microsoft Office tools) required
    -Ability to read, interpret and follow technical procedures, standards and work instructions
    -Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment required

    -Ability to perform ship checks which entails going to the physical construction products on the waterfront and offsite

     locations as needed.

    Required/Preferred Experience

    -Proven proficiency in original work of a creative/innovative nature, complex problem solving, and the review/check of other employee's work required.

    -Proven proficiency in developing design in AutoCAD required.

    -Demonstrated ability to work independently with little oversight required.

    -Able to represent BIW autonomously and in a professional manner with the waterfront community required.

    -Ability to obtain a secret clearance is required.

    -Self-motivated and able to prioritize multiple, competing assignments required.


    -Electrical design background required with multi discipline experience preferred.

    -Knowledge of back fit design products and Planning Yard procedures preferred.

    -Proven proficiency in developing 4E work specifications preferred.

    -Familiarization with DDG Class ships and Shipboard Systems preferred.
