  • Job Description

    The Director of Inventory Management reports directly to the Vice President, Supply Chain Management and Quality and is responsible for ensuring integrity and accuracy of all processes which impact inventory management, including purchasing policies, inventory levels, material receipts, put-away/pick activities, material issuances to a work order and consumption of material.


    Responsibilities include:

    • Plans, directs, and manages all activities and personnel in inventory control
    • Hires, develops, and evaluates the performance of a team of managers who conduct audits, implement process/system changes, generate improvement opportunities, and execute daily supervision activities
    • Manages teams in conducting audits and pressure tests of BIW IT systems to ensure inventory inaccuracy is maintained through system transactions
    • Responsible for integrity and accuracy of inventory auditing processes
    • Assesses departmental performance, identifies weaknesses , and creates improvement action plans to ensure the efficient supply and movement of material
    • Coordinates closely with purchasing, warehousing, materials, and ops teams to ensure internal suppliers/customers are contributing to accurate material movement and inventory tracking
    • Actively develops business cases for organizational/system changes to improve inventory flow and accuracy and to reduce risk
    • Develops plans for training buyers, warehouse staff, and materials teams in correct inventory management processes and system usage
    • Contributes to the strategic planning and goal setting of BIW Supply Chain
    • Present follow-ups and status to executive team on a weekly basis

    Required/Preferred Education/Training

    BA/BS degree in Business, Administration/Commerce, Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Logistics Management, Operations Management, Production Management, Industrial Engineering, Production Engineering

    Required/Preferred Experience

    • Experience in setting organizational vision, building teams, and managing stakeholders
    • Experience managing performance of junior managers
    • Background in root cause/correction action development and implementation
    • Experience in change management within large organizations
    • Excellent negotiation skills with vendors and internal customers
    • Strong systems and material requirements (MRP) planning knowledge, preferably on current BIW systems (e.g., MACPAC, BMCS, SAP, WLOC, etc.)
    • Experience leading teams in lean manufacturing environments
    • Robust understanding of defense contractor manufacturing processes and business models
    • Experience managing performance of an external vendor, including cost, quality, and delivery performance
    • 7–10+ years of related experience required
    • Lean Six Sigma preferred
