  • Job Description


    - Report to the Director of Design

    - Lead Structural Design efforts in the development of the Structural Class Design through the use of 3D modeling and drawing extraction

    - Responsible for schedule, quality and budgetary performance of design products that support Fabrication and interfaces with other disciplines across all programs

    - Manage design processes and execution to ensure that quality, schedule and cost performance goals are achieved on all programs

    - Facilitate communication between D87 and Production to ensure the design products meet the needs of the customer

    - Manage all producibility (PX), SGAF driven projects within scope and budget requirements

    - Collaborate with the Structural Loft/Lift/Nest Manager

    - Interface with Engineering, Program Office, Change Management, Materials, Planning, Manufacturing, Navy and other design disciplines.

    - Collect and Analyze Quality data and take corrective action as required meeting quality requirements of products produced

    - Utilize new technology to integrate 3D modeling information with the production information needed to create the structural ship parts

    - Establish and maintain effective work procedures and instructions

    - Provide technical training, guidance and leadership to assigned personnel

    - Perform supervisory and administrative duties including employee development, safety, performance evaluations, statusing and progressing work, hiring, honoring labor contracts and TAS verification


    Required/Preferred Education/Training

    BS or AS degree with 5 years' experience in a Design/ Engineering related field, or a graduate of BIW's Apprenticeship Program with 5 years' experience in a marine Engineering/Design/Manufacturing related field; or a minimum of 10 years' experience in a marine Engineering/Design/Manufacturing related field required, with emphasis in areas of production information and management

    Required/Preferred Experience

    Minimum 10 years of technical experience required; breadth of shipbuilding and marine design experience is relevant

    - 3 years of supervisory experience required, including proven ability to lead people and organizations

    - Ability to motivate and inspire teams of engineers and designers

    - Understands the elements of ship design

    - Project management skills

    - Demonstrated familiarity with graphical and analytical tools

    - Excellent organizational and communications skills, both oral and written

    - Positive relationship and reputation with U.S. Navy customer

    - Working knowledge of bargaining unit agreements (BMDA knowledge preferred)

    - Working knowledge of Earned Value Management System (EVMS)

    - Demonstrated knowledge of Lean Design
