  • Job Description

    Report to the Director of Design -Lead Structural Design efforts maintaining the structural bill of material and creating the part information required to operate the burning machines at Hardings

    - Responsible for the schedule, quality and budgetary performance related to the development of design products that support Fabrication

    - Manage design processes to ensure that quality, schedule and cost performance goals are achieved on all programs

    - Working with Hardings Leadership, ensure rapid response to Loft issues impacting production progress

    - Closely manage hull charging and ensure returns are within budgetary constraints

    - Manage all producibility (PX), SGAF driven projects within scope and budget requirements

    - Facilitate communication between D87, Production and Planning to ensure the design products meet the needs of the customer

    - Collaborate with the Class Design Structural Manager

    - Interface with Procurement, Planning, Manufacturing, and other disciplines within design

    - Integrate new technology to advance the methods used to develop production information

    - Provide support to the Hardings 2020 Capital Improvement project by ensuring all design data required to operate the new machines are  

    available to support machine installation and testing schedules

    - Collect and Analyze Quality data and take corrective action as required to meet quality requirements of products produced

    - Establish and maintain effective work procedures and instructions

    - Provide technical training, guidance and leadership to assigned personnel

    - Perform supervisory and administrative duties including employee development, safety, performance evaluations, statusing and progressing work, hiring, honoring labor contracts and TAS verification


    Required/Preferred Education/Training

    BS or AS degree with 5 years' experience in a Design/ Engineering related field, or a graduate of BIW's Apprenticeship Program with 5 years experience in a marine Engineering/Design/Manufacturing related field; or a minimum of 10 years' experience in a marine Engineering/Design/Manufacturing related field required, with emphasis in areas of production information and management

    Required/Preferred Experience

    Minimum 10 years of technical experience required; breadth of shipbuilding and marine design experience is relevant

    - 3 years of supervisory experience required, including proven ability to lead people and organizations

    - Ability to motivate and inspire teams of engineers and designers

    - Understands the elements of ship design

    - Project management skills

    - Demonstrated familiarity with graphical and analytical tools

    - Excellent organizational and communications skills, both oral and written

    - Positive relationship and reputation with U.S. Navy customer

    - Working knowledge of bargaining unit agreements (BMDA knowledge preferred)

    - Working knowledge of Earned Value Management System (EVMS)  

    - Demonstrated knowledge of Lean Design
