Job Description

Primary responsibilities of designers within this new classification will be:

• Develop Ship Installation Drawings (SIDs) in AutoCAD to support repair and alterations of LCS Class ships
• Develop technical written procedures in the Navy Maintenance Database (NMDr) to support corrective maintenance of LCS Class ships
• May involve occasional ship checks to support design development. Ship check packages must be developed in such a manner that they can serve as a basis for design development by other Planning Yard Designers.

Required/Preferred Education/Training

• High school diploma/GED required
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools
• Ability to read, interpret, and follow technical procedures, standards, and work instructions
• Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment required
• Two year Associate /Vocational Degree with focus on CAD application and design principles preferred

Required/Preferred Experience

• Minimum of one (1) year marine design experience or Associate/Vocational School degree, or BIW's Manufacturing Division apprentice program, or seven (7) years’ experience as a first class mechanic in a marine trade required. Credit may be given for graphic arts or CIS experience, and/or formal CAD training. 3D CAD or AUTOCAD proficiency preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret Ship Installation Drawings (SIDs) preferred.
• Familiarization with LCS Class ships and shipboard systems preferred
• Experience with Navy Maintenance Database (NMDr) and Navy Standard Items a plus
• Ability to represent BIW autonomously and in a professional manner in front of the Navy customer
• Ability to obtain security clearance
• Ability to travel
• Ability to obtain a Passport
• Ship checks will require climbing
• Self-motivation and a strong ability to contribute in a team environment required
